The African and Afro-American Studies Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted a conference in honor of Dr. Bereket Habteselasse for his successful and long time service. Dr. Bereket is a professor in that department and in the university's law school.

The conference, held from April 12 to14, was entitled "Law, Politics and Islam in Africa." Intellectuals from the Horn of Africa, Eritreans, Ethiopians, Sudanese, Somali, Kenyans, and Tanzanians, along with European and American scholars, were invited to present papers.

Minia Afeworki interviewed Dr. Bereket and Dr. Araya Debesai, a professor at the University of Delaware's Department of Accounting and Information Systems, about the conference.

Dr. Bereket was attorney general of Ethiopia during Emperor Haileselasse's rule. He was also the head of the commission that drafted the Eritrean constitution.
