US Government Criticizes Ethiopia for Jamming of VOA Radio

The U.S. State Department issued a statement Friday criticizing the government of Ethiopia for jamming Voice of America Amharic radio broadcasts.

"The Prime Minister may disagree with news carried in Voice of America’s Amharic Service broadcasts, " said Acting State Department Spokesman Gordon Duguid, "however, a decision to jam VOA broadcasts contradicts the Government of Ethiopia’s frequent public commitments to freedom of the press."

Jamming of Amharic Service programs began again 22 February 2010. National elections are scheduled to take place 23 May. VOA broadcasts to Ethiopia were blocked around the 2005 election, and again before the 2008 local elections.
