New Tigrigna Translation of Democracy Book

Daniel R. Mokonnen has completed the Tigrigna t ranslation of "From Dictatorship to Democracy" by Gene Sharp, Professor Emeritus of political science at the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Sharp is the founder of the Albert Einstein Institution, in Boston, Massachusetts, which is dedicated to the nonviolent evolution of democracies around the world. Professor Sharp told VOA Tigrigna program reporter Tewelde Tesfagabir, "The book is about the weaknesses in dictatorships and how they can be exploited by democrats to increase the effectiveness of their resistance." With its translation into Tigrigna this year, the book, first published in 1993, is now available in 22 languages and dialects.

Daniel Mokonnen, a human rights lawyer who is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Human Rights Law at the University of Free State, in South Africa, said that he wanted to translate the book for Tigrigna readers because it clearly shows how to bring change in governments without violence.
