Winner Designs New Africa Union Flag


Yaddesa Zewge Bojia was one of 116 competitors who wanted to design a new flag for the African Union. Yaddesa, who is a graphic designer for the University of Washington, won the contest with his design of the continent before a bursting globe on a green field. His winning design will represent the 53 African countries of the organization.

“This is the flag that represents 1.1 billion people all over Africa,” Yaddesa told VOA’s Addisu Abebe. “To be an Ethiopian and to be a designer, I am very proud.”

Addisu interviewed Yadessa about his successful design for the Amharic program, Ethiopians in America. Yaddesa, who grew up in Adama, now lives in Seattle, Washington is married and has two children.
