Afan Oromo and Tigrigna Services celebrate their 10th Anniversary


Afan Oromo and Tigrigna Programs of Voice of America, Horn of Africa Service marked their 10th anniversary on July 15th.

In these ten years, the broadcasts have provided listeners in Ethiopia and around the world with accurate and objective news and information. For the first eight years both languages were limited to 15 minutes airtime. Since the May 2004 expansion to half hour however, both services have continued providing their respective listeners with news and information as well as vital educational programs on social and political issues relevant to the target audience.

Programs in science and Technology, Health, development, Women, Youth and entertainment have immensely increased the listener ship and popularities of the services. "Oromo Feature" on Tuesdays, in Afan Oromo and "People to People" on Wednesdays on Tigrigna are the most popular programs generating continued appreciations and praises from the audience.

The weekly "Oromo Feature" depicts history of Oromo People, language, arts, culture, personalities etc. While "People to People" on Tigrigna serves as bridge between the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopians in Tigray region, holding discussions on issues of concern to both nations, on shared cultures, political divides, peace and war etc.
