Getachew Reda and Hagos Tekle are tired of a decade of political argument, a couple of years of war and the graves of thousands of dead soldiers that separate Ethiopia and Eritrea. They decided to do something about it. They think that normal people can find the way to bring Eritrea and Ethiopia back together.
Getachew and Hagos live in San Jose, California, where they founded the Ethiopia-Eritrea Friendship and Solidarity Association. Others may debate concepts like federation or confederation, but Getachew and Hagos think there must be a better idea.
“When governments fight each other, people should stand up for their rights,” said Getachew.
Through their small association, the two men have begun a series of fora, where people from both countries can sit down and come up with good ideas. They held their first and second fora in San Jose, California. Now, they are ready to take the idea of the forum throughout the United States and to Europe, where hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and Eritreans now live.
