Factions in Unity for Democracy and Justice Party Quarrel

One of Ethiopia's major opposition parties remains divided as one group elects a new chairman and tells officers of the other faction to resign.

A longtime human rights advocate, Mesfin Woldemariam, was elected vice chairman of Unity for Democracy and Justice this week. The chair of the party is lawyer Birtukan Medeksa who is serving a life sentence in prison on treason charges.

One of Mesfin's first acts in office was to declare that another party of the same name is not the true UDJ.

Mesfin's position was supported in a UDJ press statement issued by Andualem Arage last Friday charging that a faction led by Hailu Araya and Gezchew Shiferaw is not a true UDJ group.
