Ethiopia and the World Bank signed an agreement over the weekend giving an estimated $540 million to improve schools, clinics, water and sanitation systems and rural roads in the countryside.
Eleven donor countries will add to these Protection of Basic Services funds to total $737 million. This amount is the second of three phases of funding offered by the bank and its international partners, according to a press announcement released by the banks’ executive directors when they approved the amount in Washington, D.C. on last Thursday.
The press release also notes that in light of the new Ethiopian legislation on civil society organizations (CSOs), there is a need to ensure CSOs have adequate space and voice to follow through with transparency and accountability initiatives.
