US Representative Christopher Smith says the United States and other developed countries cannot ignore the plight of homeless children in Ethiopia and other poor nations.
Mr. Smith told a hearing this week that the millions of street children in the world represent a humanitarian crisis. He called homelessness an “epidemic.”
Smith, Republican of New Jersey, is chairman of the congressional subcommittee on Africa.
Lord David Alton, a British advocate for homeless children, told Smith’s committee that there are more than 150,000 street children in Ethiopia and 250,000 in Kenya.
