Defar set a new World record in the 5,000 meters, clocking 14:27:37 in
Stockholm on Wednesday.
The performance by the 25-year-old Ethiopian knocked more than three seconds
from the previous mark 14:27:42 set by her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba in Boston
in 2007, said Gezahegn of the Amharic service’s Friday Sports report.
Defar told reporters in Stockholm that after she passed the first two
kilometers, she was certain she would break the record and increased her speed
for the last kilometer.The five-foot,
one-inch tall runner ended up running the event in the exact time her husband,
fellow-runner Tewodros Hailu had predicted, she told reporters.
