Eritrean Freedom Fighter Died in Prison

The death in an Eritrean prison of Taha Mohammed Nur, age 72, has been confirmed by longtime friends and family who have held wakes in several countries in his honor. Taha was one of six founders of the Eritrean Liberation Front in Egypt in 1960 and became a champion of Arabic language and culture in the nation. The governing Eritrean People's Liberation Front was created out of the ELF in the early 1970s. Longtime friends and political colleagues Kelifa Osman and Dr. Bereket Habteselassie describe the life of one of independent Eritrea's founders in an interview with Tigrigna service reporter, Tewelde Tesfagabir. Bereket, who is a former attorney general of Ethiopia, first met Taha in Beirut in the 1960s and later served with him on the nation's Constitutional Commission. Kelifa was a lifelong friend who fought alongside Taha in Eritrea's long war of liberation until the ELF was banned.
