Ethiopian Scientist Wins Award

"I've always been a herder as a kid and as a grown up. Then I was running after cattle but now I'm running after satellites," says Endawoke Yezengaw, the young Ethiopian scientist, one of the winners of the 2006 University of California Chancellor's Award for best Postdoctoral Researcher.

He is working on a project coordinated by UCLA and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. His research on space atmosphere using global positioning system technology data made him one of the five awardees out of UCLA's 1,155 Post-doctoral contestants. Currently the 34-year old Dr. Yizengaw is in Trieste, Italy to help prepare the African Small Instrument Array satellite for the International Heliophysical Year (IHY). He talked to the VOA Amharic program's Fregenet Asseged about his humble background and his award-winning research. (Click link above to listen to the interview in Amharic)
