Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher, the general manager of Ethiopia's environmental watchdog, the Environmental Protection Authority, was one of seven people honored on April 21, 2006 with the United Nations Environment Program's "Champion of the Earth Award."
The prize is given annually to recognize the outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations in protecting and improving the environment.
The U.N. Environment Program called him a champion against patenting human life forms and for community rights in Africa. He was interviewed for the VOA Tigrigna program by Betre Siltan, about his work and his acheivements.
