Eritrea Warns of Instability Over Border Issue

Eritrea warns that regional instability may result from the United Nations' failure to make Ethiopia finalize the two countries' border.

In a statement, Eritrea's Foreign Ministry renewed charges that Ethiopia is flouting international law by rejecting a border line drawn up by an independent panel.

The Horn of Africa neighbors had agreed to accept the panel's ruling under a pact to end their two-year border war in 2000.

Recent actions that include Eritrea's expulsion of some U.N. peacekeepers have raised concern the conflict may resume.

On Tuesday, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the situation between Ethiopia and Eritrea has reached a "dangerous stalemate," and suggested possible changes to the peacekeeping force.

Mr. Annan gave the Security Council six options that range from maintaining the status quo to a full withdrawal.
