Bale Zone Residents Leave to Search for Food

Food shortages plagues some communities, but government officials say they’re meeting needs.

Despite improved rains in some areas of Ethiopia, undetermined numbers of those living in Bale zone’s Goro and Rayitu woredas are leaving the region in search of food. Residents complained that there is no food on the market and they have had no rain for two years.

Sisay Hurisa, the vice administrator of the area said there is a food shortage but the government is able to manage the problem.

The U.N. World Food Program reports that food insecurity is reported in some woredas of Bale, Arsi, Kelem Wollega, East and West Hararghe zones in Oromiya. The U.N. Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also reports food insecurity continues in Oromiya, Somali, Amhara, Tigray and Southern Nations.
