Sailing to Yemen with Sharks

Abdinasir recalls his voyage to Yemen two years ago when he and his brother were smuggled across the Gulf of Aden to escape the hazards of refugee life in the Horn of Africa. His brother became ill and was thrown overboard where he died in shark-infested waters.

Sora Arero, VOA Afan Oromo, talked to Abdinasir about a trip that thousands make, and that many do not survive. UNHCR says the peak season starts in September.

As a survivor now returned to Somali territory, Abdinasir says the captain charged $80 for each of the 120 refugees crowded on the vessel. The voyage took 36 hours, during which no one could move and no one was allowed to speak during this hazardous smuggling operation.
