Oromo Group in Minnesota Sponsors Development Projects in Rural Ethiopia

The Oromo Evangelical Lutheran Church of Minnesota is providing development assistance in rural western Ethiopia. Through the Oromo Christian Relief and Development Ministry (OCRDM), which it founded in 2002, the church has been engaged in various relief and development activities in co-operation with the Minneapolis synod and other partner churches in United States and in Africa, especially in Oromia.

The projects include building houses for orphaned children, constructing wells, preserving spring water for needy communities and assisting Oromo refugees at refugee camps in Africa,. The Oromo group also provides scholarships for needy students and operates micro lending programs. The VOA Afan Oromo program’s Jalene Gemeda interviewed Girma Daka, chairman of the OCRDM, who recently visited Yubdo in the Oromia region, about 550 kilometers west of Addis Ababa.
