Dire Dawa Flood Victims Describe Tragedy


More than 250 people died as a result of flood in Diredawa, with at least 10,000 people left homeless. Jalene Gemeda interviewed two victims of the flood who were rescued from underneath sand that swept through the area with the floodwaters.

Sartu Mohammed and Sufiyan Umer, who lost two of their children, described the trauma as their worst nightmare. Sufiyan, who was deafened by the injuries sustained during the flood, spoke to Jalene through a second person. Diredawa City Administrator, Abdul Aziz Mohammed said the rescue effort, and emergency assistance by the government and individuals from all over Ethiopia is very heartening.
